INFORMATION ON THE VOLUNTEER EXAM SESSION AT HAM-CON, FEBRUARY 24, 2024


1. If you do not have an Federal Registration Number (FRN), please go to
https://www.fcc.gov/wireless/support/knowledge-base/universal-licensing-system-uls-resources/getting-fcc-registration and follow the directions to obtain the FRN number.
We cannot examine you without this!

2. Go to the FCC 605 form at http://www.ham-con.org/605Form.pdf and fill it out on line, and then print the filled out form. Bring this with you to the exam session.

3. The Exam Session will be Saturday, February 24 at 1:30 at the Hampton Inn Convention Center in Colchester.
Enter through Door C IN THE BACK.
DO NOT use the main entrance of the Hampton Inn. If you do, you will likely get lost! Be on time! Late applicants will not be tested.

What to Bring!

  1. One legal photo ID (identification):
    1. State Driver’s License
    2. Government issued Passport
    3. Military or Law Enforcement Officer Photo ID card
    4. Student School Photo ID card
    5. State Photo ID card

  2. If no photo ID is available, two forms of identification:
    1. Non-photo State ID card (some states still have them)
    2. Birth certificate (must have the appropriate seal)
    3. Social security card
    4. Employer's wage statement or Minor's work permit
    5. School ID card
    6. School or Public Library card
    7. Utility bill, bank statement or other business correspondence that specifically names the person; or a postmarked envelope addressed to the person at his or her current mailing address as it appears on the Form 605.

  3. Students/minors without a photo ID need to bring only one of the above items if a legal guardian presents their photo ID; otherwise two non-photo IDs are required. Minor children (under the age of 18) may be accompanied in the room by an adult during the test.

  4. Federal Registration Number (FRN): VECs are required by the FCC before you can be tested. If you DO NOT have an FRN, you need to create an FCC user account and register your Social Security Number (SSN) in the FCC Commission Registration System (CORES) before attending exam sessions. Registrants will be assigned an FRN which will be used in all license transactions with the FCC.   5. If applicable, bring either a photocopy of your current Amateur Radio license or a reference copy printed out from the FCC website, the license information printed from ARRL website or QRZ website, or the original(s) and photocopy(s) of any Certificates of Successful Completion of Examination (CSCE) you may hold from previous exam sessions. If your license has already been issued by FCC, the CSCE showing license credit is not needed. The photocopy(s) will not be returned. Instructions on how to obtain an official FCC license copy are on the ARRL "Obtain License Copy" web page.

  6. Be sure to have some number two pencils with erasers to fill out the answer sheet. You will also need a pen to fill out any necessary applications.

  7. A calculator with the memory erased and formulas cleared is allowed. You may not bring any written notes or calculations into the exam session. Slide rules and logarithmic tables are acceptable, as long as they're free of notes and formulas. Cell phones must be silenced or turned off during the exam session and the phones' calculator function may not be used. In addition, iPhones, iPads, Androids, smartphones, Blackberry devices and all similar electronic devices with a calculator capability, may NOT be used.

  8. Bring the testing fee, $15.00, CASH ONLY.

  9. After you pass your exam, the FCC will contact you about collecting a $35.00 fee that needs to be paid before you recieve your license. The FCC will email you a link to do that. You have 10 days to pay. You pay by credit card. It goes without saying that you must provide a reliable email address on your application or the FCC will not be able to contact you.
